I've been wanting to try one of those Segway "Human Transporter" scooters, so that might be my excuse to take a trip to Key Biscayne. The Sonesta Beach Resort just became the first resort in the world to open a RELAY store that will rent the gadgets to guests.

(September 24, 2003 - Key Biscayne, Florida) -- In an exclusive agreement between RELAY Transportation, Inc. and Sonesta Beach Resort Key Biscayne, Florida, Sonesta will open the world’s first RELAY Store & Segway™ Excursion Center on September 24, 2003. The Segway™ Human Transporter (HT) is the revolutionary new self-balancing, electric-powered transportation device designed for people on the go. With dimensions no wider than the average adult body and the ability to emulate human balance, the Segway HT uses the same space as a pedestrian and can go wherever a person can walk. RELAY is a new concept. It is the nation’s only complete source for Neighborhood Electric Vehicles (NEVs), including Segway HTs, Electric Cars and Electric Scooters.
“We are excited to open the nation’s first RELAY store as a Segway Excursion Center at Sonesta Beach Resort Key Biscayne. Now the hotel guests and local area residents will have the chance to try out the Segway HT that they’ve heard so much about,” said Keith Albrizzi, president of RELAY Transportation, Inc. which also rents and sells other electric vehicles and scooters at the resort. “Our collaboration with the Sonesta Beach Resort Key Biscayne is a win-win for all of us. Matthias Kammerer, general manager of the resort noted, “In addition to our tennis, spa, watersports, and bicycles, we are delighted to now begin offering RELAY rentals for Segway excursions to our guests and local residents. These low speed electric transportation devices are a truly unique way to get around Key Biscayne and see the sites on the island.”
RELAY currently offers two programs for Sonesta Beach Resort Key Biscayne guests and local area residents: The Segway Experience, which is a 30-minute introductory program for first time riders, and Segway Adventure Tours, an exciting 45-minute guided exploration of the Key Biscayne area. The center also offers the RELAY Kids Clinic, a fun 30-minute electric vehicle encounter for young people ages 8 and up. In the near future, RELAY will introduce another program, the Segway Safari. This will be a 2 ˝ hour excursion where riders go off on their own to explore the beauty and excitement of Key Biscayne and the surrounding areas. The RELAY Segway Excursion Center is located next to the tennis center at Sonesta Beach Resort Key Biscayne. Program rates begin at $25 for the hotel guests and $30 for all others. Other electric vehicles are also available there for rental and/or purchase.
The success of Segway HT is its breakthrough technology, termed "dynamic stabilization,” which enables it to work seamlessly with the body's movements. Gyroscopes and tilt sensors in the unit monitor a rider's center of gravity at about 100 times a second. When the rider leans slightly forward, the Segway HT moves forward. When the rider leans slightly back, the Segway HT moves backward.
