Fawlty Towers for Sale
Wednesday December 8, 2004
Fans of British sitcom "Fawlty Towers" will be interested to hear the hotel that inspired the series is for sale. John Cleese stayed at the Hotel Gleneagles in Torquay back in 1971 with the rest of the Monty Python troupe.
Then-owner Donald Sinclair made an impression; Cleese later called him "the most wonderfully rude man I have ever met." According to legend, during their stay Basil Fawlty -- er, Mr. Sinclair -- threw a suitcase over a cliff "in case it contained a bomb," complained about Terry Gilliam's table manners and bopped another guest in the head with a bus schedule.
