Norovirus Season
Monday February 7, 2005
Just a reminder, with flu season comes norovirus season. Don't make the mistake of associating the virus with cruise ships; the virus spreads just as easily in hotels. Last year, an outbreak of the virus (or a close relation) affected 1,200 guests at the Tropicana Las Vegas. This year, three hotels in the Dominican Republic have confirmed norovirus outbreaks.
As for prevention, the CDC reports that the norovirus is unfortunately often transmitted through food (food prep workers who haven't washed their hands properly, and prepare salads, for example). It is also spread by contacting infected surfaces (doorknobs, elevator buttons are common culprits), so wash your hands thoroughly and often to cut down on your chances of getting sick.
