No sooner do I catch up on the last excruciating episodes of Mark Burnet's reality TV schlock-fest "The Casino" on my Tivo (OK, I'm a little behind), does this news cross my desk. Tim and Tom (Timothy Poster and Thomas Breitling) are selling the Golden Nugget to Landry's, owner of such mediocre-food-but-fun-concept restaurants as Joe's Crab Shack and Willie G's.
Tim and Tom seemed to share a problem with the reality TV show that followed their big gamble: too much emphasis on the "high-rollers." Following the adolescent antics of serious gamblers created disappointing TV as well as an underachieving bottom line. But I couldn't help cheering for the Golden Nugget. The dream of old-style Las Vegas, Tim's oh-so-cute earnestness, Tom's bad-boy approach. I'll miss them.
I marked the turn of events with an early dinner Saturday at the Rainforest Cafe. The journey to Freemont Street will have to wait until May.
