Hotel Solamar in San Diego
Thursday September 1, 2005
I stopped by the new Kimpton Hotel in San Diego, the Hotel Solamar, just after it opened this spring. I could see Petco Park out of the window of my suite; it's so close, it looks like you could catch a fly ball from the rooftop pool deck. The hotel is several blocks from the ocean, but brings the sea indoors with Kimpton's signature mix of sleek whimsy (read: starfish shadowboxes and animal print robes).
The rooftop swimming pool deck, with its fire pits, palm trees and Jbar, has become the place to meet in San Diego this summer. If you're felling really social, book a room that opens onto the deck; you'll look like a V.I.P. If you'd rather steer clear of the crowds, one of the King Spa rooms is the perfect urban retreat.
