Hotels Handing Out Liquid Freebies

Tuesday August 15, 2006
The thought of checking everything I need for a flight, even for a two-day trip, has me dreading the next flight. And checking liquids like shampoo along with my laptop and digital camera in a suitcase that will be opened, dug through, re-zipped and thrown into a cargo hold? If I thought the requirements were going to go away anytime soon (remember the shoe bomber? We're still taking off shoes at security), I'd delay my travel plans. But that isn't always an option. I think shippers like DHL, Fedex and UPS are going to see an upswing in business.

Many hotels are stepping up to the plate, offering free replacements for toiletries that are now forbidden as carry-ons. Omni Hotels offered immediately to replace makeup, sunscreen, toothpaste, contact lens solution, nail polish and other items that travelers caught last week may have had confiscated and tossed in the trash.

Wyndham announced a similar initiative shortly after. Many other hotels have always had items in stock for travelers caught without essentials, and will no doubt be stocking up for travelers in the coming days. Kitty Bean Yancey reports in USA Today that the Exchange Hotel in New York City is offering guests a $25 drugstore credit. Or, guests can choose to Fed-Ex their carry-on bags, free of charge.

Have you stayed in a hotel since the new security restrictions have been in effect? What items did they replace for you?

Eventhough it is not recquired for hotels to provide their clients with freebies or replacement items, I think that as a sign of goodwill gesture it is just right that they do. The high security alert makes it difficult for tourists or businessmen to keep track of their luggages resulting in losses and confiscations.

I am baffled as to how I am going to handle up my coming 13 hrs. flight. I wear contacts, and with having to get to airport 4 hrs. in advance, the flight itself, customs, and then getting to hotel, I am looking at at least a 20 hour day. How, without solution, can I moisten and clean my contacts during the flight ???

I’ll be traveling to France next month. Hopefully the upscale hotel will be able to provide some help. I am wondering if I can take an empty polypropelene bottle on the plane and have the stewardess fill it with water and ice. I have brought my own water on board in the past because the beverage service is never enough.

Nancy, I believe revised TSA guidelines allow for small amounts of eyedrops to be carried on board now. See http://businesstravel.about.com/od/packingtips/a/packing_TSA.htm for more details.
