Room Service for Mr. Jones...or Is It Mr. Jones?

Monday November 6, 2006
Castell CochA total of 1,224 people with the surname Jones gathered from all around the world in Wales over the weekend, breaking a world record and making a busy weekend for staff at the Hilton Cardiff Hotel. Some guests resorted to using their home cities and states instead of names to help staff figure out who they were.

Manager Mark Walker told the Western Mail the Hilton Cardiff often has multiple guests named Jones, it, after all, being Wales. "We have to make sure the right Jones is in the right room, being delivered the right room service or laundered items. However...with hundreds of Joneses descending on the capital - hopefully they'll have distinctive first names so that we can ensure the right Jones gets what he or she needs."

The previous world record was set in Sweden by 583 Norbergs. The event featured entertainment from pop icon Grace Jones and opera singer Dame Gwyneth Jones. Oddly, legendary Welsh singer Tom Jones was banned from performing, since he was born a Woodward - Jones is his stage name.
