Over the summer, a friend of mine flew to a three-day business meeting, only to find when she arrived that the airline had lost her luggage. She scrambled to obtain things to wear for the meetings, only to have the airline lose the new stuff on the way back. I advised her not to check luggage in the future. "But I have no choice," she told me. "There's too much stuff I need." I'm not exactly a low-maintenance traveler, so I can sympathize.

After the new 3-1-1 liquid rules went into effect, I started checking luggage also. After having my suitcase lost twice in a year, and missing one international flight because of an early check-in cut-off time, I vowed not to check luggage with the airlines again. I even took an eight-day trip that covered three destinations in two countries -- without once checking my suitcase. And trust me, I wouldn't dream of roughing it without my Paul Mitchell Super Skinny Hair Serum. How did I do it (and how can you)? Read Six Tricks for Packing Liquids in Carry-On Luggage.
