I'm heading out to Las Vegas in early January, and had to get a flight on New Years' Eve (or pay $1000 more for the same ticket on New Years' Day). I was stressed about hotel rates on the Vegas Strip on that popular night, with good reason: the hotel I chose triples its rates that night. So I checked off-strip: Red Rock Resort in Summerlin came to my rescue, with rates under $200. Personally, I'm looking forward to toasting with Champagne away from the Strip crowds, but should I change my mind, the parties are only about a 15-minute cab ride away. This strategy works for many destinations; if location isn't critical, trying a suburb can save you hundreds.
