Guest writer Terry Ward recently checked in from The Dolder Grand in Zurich, Switzerland, where she was in awe of the hotel's impressive indoor pool and extensive wellness area, pictured here. Europeans, it turns out, take their sauna and steam room time pretty seriously, especially during the winter months, and Terry was indulging in the whole process like the locals do, cold plunge and all:
As far as city hotels that make you feel very far removed from the urban rush, I can't think of anywhere more escapist than The Dolder Grand. I spent most of my days exploring Zurich's old city, just 20 minutes away from the hotel by funicular and tram, enjoying the river views and beautiful old buildings and churches. And after a few spins around The Dolder Grand's ice skating rink upon my return, I'd head straight for the wellness area, with a stunning indoor pool, three outdoor hot tubs with snowy views and one of the most beautiful sauna and steam room areas I've seen. The unofficial wellness ritual includes heating up in the sauna until you're dripping with sweat and then walking outdoors in the fresh, cool air to recover before heading straight for the Snow Paradise--a frosty room filled with snow, which you rub all over your body to get your blood moving again before relaxing in a tub filled with warm smooth pebbles.
If that's the European wellness routine, I say sign me up!
