Before You Travel With Your Pet

By Charlyn Keating Chisholm, About.com

Increasingly, people reluctant to leave their family pets behind when they travel are packing the pets and bringing them along. Hotels have become much more pet friendly in recent years, and even upscale chains like Hotel Monaco, Loews, W Hotel, Westin and The Four Seasons are welcoming four-legged guests. If you are considering taking your pet along on your next trip, here are a few tips:

Before You Reserve Your Room

Even if you've found a pet-friendly hotel, call the hotel directly and double check their pet policies. Ask about any fees or deposits required. Ask about any size or weight limits the hotel imposes to ensure your pet will be welcome.

Bring Familiar Items

Pack familiar toys, snacks and food. Bring any medication you need, along with the phone number of your veterinarian.

Consider a Kennel

Consider investing in a portable kennel. It can provide a more secure environment for your dog and cut back on the amount of barking he or she will do.

Do Your Homework

Before you go, identify pet-friendly restaurants and attractions, dog-walking routes, and public parks near your hotel. In many cases, you may be able to call the hotel directly for this information.

Bring Some ID

Many hotels will provide a temporary ID tag for your pet which includes the name and phone number of the hotel. If this is not the case, consider having temporary ID tags made with a number at which you can be reached while you are out of town.

Don't Leave Your Pet Unattended

Never leave your pet unattended in the hotel room. Keep your pet on a leash when outside the room.

Keep a Routine

Maintain your pet's normal sleeping, feeding and walking schedules as much as possible.

Keep It Clean

Always clean up after your pet. Keep in mind that you may be responsible for any damage to the room done by your pet.
