District
Points of Interest: The historic St. Charles Avenue streetcar line transverses the entire length of Uptown New Orleans, passing stately mansions, centuries-old oak trees and picturesque parks along the way. During Mardi Gras, most of the major parades start at Napoleon Avenue (the North/South street right in the middle of the above map) and continue all the way towards downtown. Tulane and Loyola Universities sit side-by-side on the Avenue, across the street from lovely Audubon Park. Just across Magazine Street is the Audubon Zoo, easily reachable by a shuttle which picks up at the streetcar stop on St. Charles Ave., or by a boat that ferries guests downriver to the French Quarter. Magazine Street is where you'll find a large concentration of art galleries and antique stores, plus several notable restaurants. The Garden District is a residential area covering a few square blocks, best explored on foot either on your own or with any one of the tour groups that visit daily.
