Ducks at The Peabody:
The Peabody Duck tradition got its start at the Peabody in Memphis about 70 years ago. Rumor has it that the general manager and his buddy left their live decoy ducks in the hotel fountain after returning from a hunting trip. Yes, whiskey was involved. But their mischief delighted guests who insisted the ducks stay. Now each day at 11 a.m. a Sousa march plays as the ducks proceed with their Duck Master from their Royal Peabody Duck Palace to the fountain. After floating in the fountain all day, the process is reversed as the ducks march away from their fountain at 5 p.m.
