Aruba is a small island (about 70 square miles) in the Southern Caribbean. Aruba's year-round mild climate, constant breezes and friendly residents make it a popular Caribbean destination for couples and families. Aruba claimed its autonomy from the Netherlands Antilles in the 1980s, and is an independent entity within the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
The hotels are mostly grouped on the west side of Aruba, just north of the capital, Oranjestad. The primary tourist areas are on Palm and Eagle beaches. A near-constant tradewind blows off the western coast, and all the beaches face the sunset.
