What's Special About The Midland:
The Midland Hotel in Manchester, England delights guests by combining historic Edwardian beauty with modern accoutrements. The red brick and brown terracotta grand hotel is conveniently located in the city center within a block or two of Manchester's top restaurants, pubs, entertainment hubs, conference center and historic sites. Built in 1903 for the Midland Railway Co. to serve wealthy train passengers, the top-rated hotel has been extensively renovated in recent years. Most common areas retain their historic ambience while guestrooms are contemporary in design.
Guest Rooms at The Midland:
  • 312 guest rooms
  • Guest rooms are a minimum of 288 square fee; there are 14 suites.
  • Each room features flat-screen TV, bathrobes, safe, WiFi, trouser press, coffee maker and tea service, hairdryer and a mini-bar.
  • Among the green features: A key-card system turns off your lights when you leave your room.

Dining at The Midland:
Restaurants include:
  • The French, known for its fine French cuisine, has served top celebrities from Luciano Pavarotti to Posh Spice.
  • The Colony Restaurant offers European cuisine in trendy setting.
  • For something more exotic, try the Octagon Lounge, which has a Turkish flavor. In addition to cocktails, beer and wine, the lounge also serves light snacks and afternoon tea.
Activities and Amenities at The Midland:
  • It's easy to stay fit and relax at The Midland Hotel because there's a full-service spa and fitness center on the lower level. Guests can take aerobics classes, swim or play squash.
  • The Reflections Spa offers a wide variety of body treatments plus salon services.
  • The Wyvern Bar is a great place to chat over a cocktail or two.
Good to Know About The Midland:
  • Past hotel guests include Winston Churchill, Marlene Dietrich and Princess Diana.
  • Several ghostly visitors, including "the lady in grey" are said to inhabit the hotel.
Historic Tours of The Midland:
Barbara Frost, blue badge guide and author of "Memories of the Midland," has been giving complimentary history tours at The Midland Hotel for more than 20 years. Inquire at the front desk for tour times and days. Guests will learn about the hotel's storied past, including how Charles Stewart Rolls and Fredrick Henry Royce met there and decided to create Rolls Royce Ltd.
Destinations Near The Midland:
The Midland Hotel is located just a block from the gothic revival style Manchester Town Hall. I highly recommend taking a blue-badge guide walking tour as the city has a rich history dating from Roman times. Beer drinkers will want to try a fresh Boddingtons, Manchester's famous pale ale, at one of the local pubs. Visitors can also tour the Old Trafford stadium, home of the famous soccer club Manchester United.
Getting to The Midland:
Located about 25 minutes from the Manchester International Airport.
