A hip and relaxed incarnation of what once was an accolade-earning Holiday Inn. Across the street from the beach, B Ocean straddles the border between the busy and popular stretch of beach to the south and a quieter residential section to the north. Take a photo tour of B Ocean Fort Lauderdale

B Ocean Fort Lauderdale: Guest Rooms

Guest rooms are cleverly designed and styled in sleek white. I checked into a room with large picture windows (no balcony) facing north along the Fort Lauderdale beach. A very comfortable bed with white comforter and mounds of white pillows gave me a comfortable night's sleep despite loud ambient hallway noise from a few spring breakers (the hotel luckily was right on top of the situation).

A combo desk and dressing table was a handy space to dine in-room or work with a view to the surf. The petit bathroom had open shower with a rainforest head and a small single vanity--one at a time only. Great touches were a nice-sized closet with shelves, a safe, and a full-length mirror, and a big flat-screen TV in the bedroom.

B Ocean Fort Lauderdale: Dining and Amenities

The hotel offers two inspired restaurant options. B'stro on the Beach is a casual gourmet spot for breakfast, lunch and dinner that features several signature items from Chef Holli of Hell's Kitchen fame. Ingredients are both high quality and locally sourced; the staff was friendly and efficient. A small but satisfying breakfast buffet had fresh fruit, pastries, eggs, bacon and sausage (don't miss the slightly spicy and very flavorful "crispy potatoes").

Across the lobby, SAIA is open for dinner with sushi, Thai and other Asian delicacies include signature rolls like the Ocean Blue (a tempura-fried roll with eel, avocado and boursin cheese). And I'm still dreaming about the savory Tamari Scallop--yum. They're also known for cocktails such as the spicy SAIA-Rita with Cazadores, jalapeno and pear.

Out by the pool, Quench serves up a full bar as well as light entrees such as a standout heirloom tomato and fresh mozzarella with arugula.

B Ocean Fort Lauderdale: Recreation

B Ocean's small ground-level pool is pleasantly heated and surrounded by lounge chairs, umbrellas and those to-die-for curtained outdoor sofa loungers--grab one early if you're a shade-lover like I am.

A small gym just off the pool overlooks the ocean, although I bypassed it in favor of a long walk on Fort Lauderdale's beautiful stretch of beach. Go south for restaurants and gift shops; north for a quieter stretch.
