From Anon: My wife and I just returned from New Orleans where we stayed four nights at the Maison St. Charles. While the motel portion of the hotel seemed old and a little less maintained, it seemed to be clean, with excellent maid service. We found the staff very attentive and helpful.
The location of the Maison St Charles was perfect for us. It is in the beginning of the Garden District and for $1.25 you can hop on the streetcar that stops in front of the hotel. It will take you to Canal Street where you can walk across the street to the beginning of the French Quarter or South to the Riverwalk Shops and Aquarium. Since we were there for four nights we opted to buy a three-day streetcar pass, at the bank across the street, for $12 each. That gave us unlimited riding any time of the day or night and we didn't have to worry about the exact change problem. The streetcar runs frequently -- I would guess every 15 minutes, 24 hours a day.

The other great feature of this location are the nearby restaurants -- The La Madeline French restaurant is part of the Maison St Charles and is absolutely wonderful. We ate breakfast, lunch and dinner there at various times. We especially loved to grab a window table and watch the world go by our window as we ate. Within four blocks you will find Delmonicos (dressy and pricey), a Japanese, a Mexican, Italian (Bravo's), Copeland's Cheesecake Bistro, and several other local restaurants.

As far as safety is concerned we were never uneasy although we are not late night owls either so can't give an opinion on the late night atmosphere.

Oh yes, the parking valet will make reservations for you with various tours available in the city. We took a Swamp Boat Tour that was recommended to us and enjoyed it very much. Pickup was at the hotel and right on time.

Speaking of parking, it is valet, and your cars are parked in a fenced in lot across the street. The lot seemed very secured and the price was $14 per day, much less than French Quarter hotels. We actually never took our car out from the time we checked in until the time we left.
