The lobby of the Queen Anne hotel is the meeting place for the San Francisco Ghost Hunt, a nightly tour of brave souls led by Jim Fassbinder. Jim is a unique mix of storyteller, magician, and comedian. The walking ghost tour of the Pacific Heights neighborhood turned out to be quite entertaining, filled with history and fascinating stories.

Dressed in a theatrical costume topped with a vintage stovepipe hat, Jim carries a battered leather backpack with "Ghost Hunt" written in silver studs. He starts the tour by explaining his theory of ghosts as representing "the manifestations of an extreme emotion, somehow stuck in time."

Jim takes us first on a ghost tour of the Queen Anne hotel. One of his colorful tales centers around two girls who sat in a certain chair. They felt a comforting, invisible hand resting on their arms. "I couldn't get them out of the hotel to start the tour," Jim complains good-naturedly. "So now I don't tell anyone where the chair is."
