Favored by Los Angeles' beautiful people (we saw one celebrity before even checking in, and shared an elevator with another), SLS Beverly Hills joins a luxurious layout and sophisticated hospitality with a hip dining experience designed to wow guests.
Located at the intersection of Beverly Hills and Los Angeles, SLS Beverly Hills is steps away from high-end shopping on Rodeo Drive and two miles from celebrity-soaked Sunset Boulevard. The hotel features cozy accommodations in a sleek, logistically-friendly layout. Muted earth tones and Philippe Starck-designed furniture welcome guests throughout the lobbies and the guestrooms.
Opened in 2008, this three-star property has 297 non-smoking rooms and is part of Starwood Hotels & Resorts Luxury Collection. An ideal locale for exploring Beverly Hills and Los Angeles proper, SLS Beverly Hills is a great choice if you're looking for lush accommodations, world-class dining and the convenience of being near top attractions.Take a photo tour of SLS Hotel at Beverly Hills
SLS Hotel at Beverly Hills: Guest Rooms
One of the newest stars in L.A.'s hospitality firmament, SLS Beverly Hills is an example of sleek design and high-end elements. I will say that the hipness and sleekness can sometimes be too much--it took me ten minutes to figure out the shower. Also, movable mirrored walls equal little privacy when traveling with companions. Overall, however, the hotel's cool design and hip interiors made me feel like I was staying in celebrity-style digs.
Standard guestrooms are luxuriously furnished with plush pillowtop mattresses, 300-thread-count D. Porthault linens and furniture designed by New Design impresario Philippe Starck. Movable mirrored walls unveil a spacious slate-tiled bathroom with an infinity sink, rainforest showerhead and full-size (not tiny travel-size) organic eco-friendly bath amenities. A dropdown cubby bar in the entryway provides all the ingredients for a mellow martini.
In addition to singles, doubles and suites, the hotel features Lifestyle Suites with personal training equipment and Pure Rooms with hypo-allergenic mattress and bedding. A limited number of suites offer lush garden terraces.
SLS Hotel at Beverly Hills: Restaurants
SLS Beverly Hills has two dining options -- The Bazaar by Jose Andres and Tres. The Bazaar was voted one of the 25 best U.S. city hotel restaurants in the 2011 Zagat survey.
We had one of the most unique and delicious meals in recent memory at what's also one of L.A.'s hottest eateries, The Bazaar. Popular with locals and celebrities for its extensive menu of innovative and traditional tapas, it was created by Chef Jose Andres, the man who brought tapas to American audiences. The Bazaar provides a unique three-room approach to dining, with pre-dinner cocktails in the waiting area, dinner in the dining area and heavenly pastries in the dedicated dessert room. We supped on acorn-fed, free-range Iberico ham, jicama-wrapped guacamole and duck liver sandwiches while sipping cool Caipirinhas. For dessert, we sampled earl grey chocolate bonbons, double chocolate cookies and the Nitro Coconut Floating Island -- the last one a decadent delight featuring passion fruit and vanilla.
Situated off the lobby area, Tres provides all-day dining options and a fabulous breakfast spread with fruit, granola and assorted breakfast pastries. Dining on mouthwatering omelettes with Iberico ham at the communal marble counters in the private lounge area seems to me to be the perfect cure for late-night club-hopping.
SLS Hotel at Beverly Hills: Amenities and Neighborhood
We happened to stay on the same floor as the spa and 24-hour fitness center, making workouts and the requisite post-workout massages very convenient. Guests get free access to the 2,500 square-foot fitness center's weight machines, cardio machines and personal plasma-screen TVs with music options. A personal SLS fitness concierge will familiarize you with the equipment and help you choose the right machine for your workout.
It's tempting to luxuriate afterwards with a soothing massage or, as my wife enjoyed, an expertly applied facial in one of the six treatment rooms at Ciel, the adjacent 5,000 square-foot spa. Guests of the spa get exclusive use of the spa pool and the co-ed lounge with world-class spa cuisine with their treatment purchase.
On the hotel's 6th floor, guests can wade into the rooftop pool on the 11,500 square-foot deck. One highlight of my stay was enjoying a cool cocktail poolside with a close-up view of the beautiful homes in Beverly Hills.
Restaurants and shopping (including Bloomingdale's, just two blocks away) are within walking distance. Both the high-end shops of Rodeo Drive and the hip-happening clubs of Sunset Boulevard are two miles away.(Reviewed 11/1/2011)
