Review:
I fell in love with this atmospheric, family-run hotel on the banks of the Werse River. The setting is idyllic, amidst trees with rolling lawns sloping gently down to the river. Three buildings, once part of the largest farmhouse in the area, comprise this picturesque and romantic retreat.

Converted in 1950, the hotel's 47 rooms are larger than what you would typically see in this region. The smallest room, decorated like an attic bedroom in your German grandmother's house, fits a single bed and dormer windows. A junior suite smelled luxuriously of wood, and featured a four-poster bed with curtains. The Tower Suite includes a fireplace for those crisp German winter evenings. (Only two of the main buildings have elevators.) Two private villas, each in their own building, sit directly on the waterfront. Both include fireplaces, and one boasts a sauna.

The restaurant in the main building is rustic and cozy, with a massive open fireplace that is always lit in the winter. Hunting trophies from the owner's father and grandfather line the walls of this masculine, wood-beamed room. Smaller, more formal meeting and reception rooms have lighter palettes and views of the river.
