Review:
Originally a castle whose main buildings date back to 1550, Schloss Wilkinghege was converted to a hotel 35 years ago by the father of the present owner. The castle was one of the region's "Water Castles" (Wasserschloss), castles built with natural moats created from the river. The grounds are lovely and have the feel of the country estate it was until 1955; the hotel is popular for events such as weddings and christenings, and has a small chapel (for up to 30 people) at its entrance. On one side, guest rooms overlook the 18-hole golf course. The hotel's restaurant is a warm and lovely room filled with portraits, served well by chef Martin Löffler's eclectic mix of Asian and French cuisine.

Guest rooms, split between the main building and an annex, share an unfortunate affinity for brass, chrome and glass furnishings, among which hides an occasional stunning antique desk. Each is unique in size and design. The twenty rooms in the main building have a more classic style; room #1 is traditionally used as a bridal suite. Rooms in the Tower (the former stables) have contemporary furnishings, and are topped by the two-story Tower Suite, whose second floor is a sitting room with views from all sides. Bathrooms are on the whole small, with the noteable exception of the Von Rhemen suite (Room 9), a very large corner room with a sitting area and desk overlooking the golf course. The suite's airy bathroom featured Philippe Starck ceramic fixtures and a huge whirlpool tub with separate shower.
