The Clift is a cool hotel. So cool, in fact, there is no sign outside the building -- you just have to know it's there. (It's on Geary between Mason and Taylor, at the corner of Taylor. Now you know.) Inside, the reception is warm, with a fireplace burning year-round and white roses on the check-in desk. The interior is dark with the feel of a nightclub, and at night the beautiful people roam in and out on their way to a stylish meal at Asia de Cuba or a drink at the Redwood Room. The classic Redwood Room, so named because its interior is lined completely with the wood of a single redwood tree, has been updated with digital portraits that move eerily and designer, cool-but-uncomfortable furniture. It is made not for lounging and having a conversation (difficult at best) but for looking fabulous draped on a stylish chair sipping an apple martini (yum) and watching the beautiful people.
Most guest rooms at the Clift are decorated in cool white, cream and lavender. Furniture is modern with blonde wood and orange plexiglass. Rooms at the Clift are small, but large mirrors keep them from feeling too cramped. Large mirrors on the walls help as well. Frette linens and goose-down comforters on the bed add a comforting, better-than-home feeling. Superior King rooms have 40 more square feet than regular Kings, and some include private treadmills.
