Top 6 Girls' Getaway Weekend Ideas

By Charlyn Keating Chisholm, About.com

Leave the stresses of work and family at home and get away for the weekend with the girls. These ideas for girls' getaway weekends will give you more time to spend with your girlfriends to talk, bond and of course, shop.

1. The Big City

Big cities mean luxury hotels, world-class shopping and entertainment from opera to the theater. Shop all day if you want, or linger at a museum for hours. Or just sit at a sidewalk café and finish a cup of coffee (and a conversation). Top off your day with a gourmet meal or a spa treatment. With no one complaining of boredom, and no babysitter woes, you and your girlfriends will feel like you have nothing but time on your hands. When is the last time you had that feeling?

2. A Luxury Spa Resort

The right spa resort will leave you feeling so pampered, you'll never want to leave the property and venture out in to the big, bad world. A spa resort lets you and your friends pay attention to a few people whose needs are largely ignored most of the year -- yourselves. Take a yoga class, get a massage and a pedicure, have someone tailor menus around you, cook delicious and healthy meals, and do all the cleaning. Get re-acquainted with yourself as well as with your girl friends.

3. Las Vegas

If you and your normally sedate and dignified girlfriends prefer to cut loose in a place where there's no chance of being spotted by your child's homeroom teacher while you're dancing on a table, Las Vegas was tailor made for your girls' weekend getaway. This 24-hour town has gambling, freely-flowing drinks, shows, even roller coasters. Spend your days at the unbelievable shops and your nights -- well, you should all just agree to leave it in Vegas.

4. The Beach

Ahh, the beach. Close your eyes and picture yourself and your closest friends in a private cabana, with a private cabana boy spritzing your face with refreshing citrus spray and refilling your margarita. You could even finish that trashy novel, then trade up with a friend.

5. Take a Road Trip

Just like in college. Only difference is, you'll be staying in much nicer places. Pick California's Pacific Coast Highway, Route 66, a trip up the East Coast ... anywhere, really. Just get off the roads you travel every day and see something new. It's not the destination, it's the journey.

6. Mardi Gras in New Orleans

It's early this year (February 8) so make your plans now. Known as the biggest free show on Earth, Mardi Gras is much more than the MTV version of Spring Break in the French Quarter. It's ancient revelry, showy costumes, celebrities and more fun than you've had in years. Bring a camera and your dancing shoes and experience it together with your best girl friends. Book a hotel with a balcony, dress as royalty and watch the action from above. (In the meantime, practice your queenly wave).
